3. Less is More, Interiors

Capturing a reflection of my Grandmother's history as a performing Ballerina in the 1930s. I was inspired by the Ballet Russes from 1900s & an Art Deco style.

I encapsulated the elegance, sophistication & beauty of a Ballerina by studying their form & silhouettes created whilst performing on stage. Ballerinas morphing into different forms translated through my design work evoking a sense of rhythm and liberated movements.

Capturing the energy & creative spirit through mark making, I kept to a refined, minimal and neutral colour palette in keeping with the theme 'Less Is More' and to evoke an interior of an Art Deco heritage.

I studied the interior design patterns of converted cinemas in order to gain a more modern sense of a 1920s style. I extracted colour from the exposure of the original building works of Ballet theatres, Ballerina costumes, my Grandmother's archive of photography, newspaper clippings & ballet leaflets collected over the years. Inspired by other minimalist artists & designers, I also studied the type of person that would go & watch the ballet back in the roarings 20s and 1930s', taking elements of inspiration as the clientele of the newly renovated hotel would be someone of similar activities.

My aim was to make the client feel joyful & happy when interacting with the space, allowing the creativity of dance & design to shine through her work often exploring the use of symmetry on statement-designed rugs in bedrooms, silk duvets and marbled velvet cushions for the restaurant and bar area.
